Annual General Meeting

AIRPORT

Barry and Wilfrid gave a demonstration of how AirPort (Apple's wireless communication system) can be used to link computers without connecting leads. Airport can be installed into any iMac which has a slot-loading CD drive (not earlier iMacs with tray-loading drives) or any iBook, all of which have built-in aerials.

Apple says: "Since AirPort antennas are built into most new computers from Apple, all you need to add is an internal AirPort Card for each system you want to bring onto your wireless network, and an AirPort Base Station." However they neglect to state an important cost-saving fact: if two computers are both equipped with the $99US AirPort card, then it isn't necessary to purchase the expensive ($299US) Base Station, as each card-equipped computer can communicate directly with the other. Barry demonstrated how this can be used, for example, so that the two computers can both be independently online to the Internet with only one of them plugged in to the phone line. AirPort cards are compatible with MacOS 10.1

ALADDIN SOFTWARE

The three demo software CDs which were sent to us earlier in the year (Stuffit Deluxe, Spring Cleaning and Drag Strip) were raffled among members present.

ROAD CODE

Wilfrid showed us the Road Code program, designed to assist learner drivers to become familiar with the Road Code. How many of us are up to date with all the changes in recent years?

EPSON 680 PRINTER

Barry demonstrated the capabilities of the reasonably-priced Epson 680 printer.
