REPORTS

CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOLS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TOUR

Tony gave a brief account of a recent tour which visited a group of Christchurch primary and intermediate schools. This tour was organised by Infovision Technology (a company affiliated to Magmum Mac) for the purpose of sharing what is being done in some schools with ICT (Information and Communication Technology... ie mainly computers. Many schools have now moved from using computers primarily for publishing and interactive-type applications, and are making good use of internet research to facilitate children's learning. The tour was a worthwhile experience.

APPLE ROADSHOW

eMac

eMac Barry told the group about the recent Apple Roadshow in Dunedin. This is run by Renaissance (Apple NZ's marketing company), and highlights were the new flat-screen G4 iMac computer, and further developments and information on the MacOS X system.

Roger was fortunate enough to draw the lucky giveaway prize at Roadshow, and was the recipient of a G4 iMac (much to the envy of other AMUG members!)

Announced at the Roadshow was a new Apple computer especially designed for schools, named the eMac. This has a large flat screen, and compared well in price to standard iMacs. Although it was intended as a school machine, Apple have recently announced that it will be available to other Mac-users also.

COMPUTERS AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY

Wilfrid commented on his findings at university in Dunedin, concerning the contrasting computing equipment used in the Information Science and the Computer Science Departments. The former has PC machines, and the latter operates mainly on Macs - attitudes to computing seem to vary considerably between the two departments.
