SESSIONS

MacBASICS ~ APPLEWORKS GRAPHICS

Tony gave an explanation of some of the features that can be used in AppleWorks to add graphics and decorate documents in various ways. Some of the aspects demonstrated included:
  • Rectangle Tools for Borders: This tool can add decorative borders in a choice of widths, textures and colours.
  • Line Tools and Fill Palettes: Line tools can be used for dividers, arrows, and for determining the characteristics of any line-shapes (rectangles and other polygons). The fill palettes are for selecting colour for shapes which are created using the shape-drawing tools.
  • Painting Windows: Can be opened within a document to modify a graphic. When a painting window is opened the additional painting tools (eg. eyedropper, eraser, lasso) become available so that a graphic which is copied (not dragged) into the window can be modified. The graphic can then be copied back into the drawing document - however, it still retains some 'painting' characteristics, which will become evident if you try to resize it!
  • Using Clippings: AppleWorks Clippings (formerly called Libraries) are a collection of illustrative graphics in a variety of categories which are instantly available for inserting into AppleWorks word processing, drawing or painting documents. ÊA selected graphic has only to be dragged to the desired location.

iPHOTO

A 'refresher' look at this useful utility application reminded us of its basic capabilities for storing, editing and presenting digital images. Tony will be attending the Apple iSchools conference for teachers during the school holidays, following which he should be able to explain some of the more advances features of iPhoto, as well as share some further techniques of digital photography.

iTUNES

Roger reminded us of the basic set-up of iTunes, and demonstrated the formation of playlists, getting track titles form the internet, and other aspects of the application. Audio and MP3 file-types were discussed, as well as ways of customising the iTunes windows to show the desired columns.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERS & HINTS

In this session a considerable discussion on printer settings evolved. ÊBarry asked how the printer can be prevented from producing printed pages in reverse order... a feature which can be very handy when printing a booklet, but can otherwise be annoying with just a few sheets. This can be governed (in MacOS X) by going to the Paper Handling printing option, and unchecking the ÔReverse Page OrderÕ tick-box.

Remember to send in suggestions for the proposed combined AMUG/AUGC meeting, please.
