September Meeting 2004

APPLE ROAD SHOW

Some members attended the Apple Roadshow, which featured the new series of Apple flatscreen monitors. These have a similar appearance to the new G5 iMac computers, which were announced during the Roadshow.

The G5 iMac has a thin, flat screen, behind which is the computer itself. The speakers are also incorporated at the bottom of the screen. The G5 comes in various configurations, including:

  • 17" screen model with a Combo drive (CD-ROM Read/Write and DVD Read only drive): $NZ 2340 +GST
  • 20" screen model with a Super drive (CD-ROM Read/Write and DVD Read/Write drive): $NZ 3405 +GST

SOFTWARE

Sheryl explained about Dorling Kindersley's new range of software, mainly at secondary school level, some of which works on Mac computers.

This led on to a discussion of available software in computer shops - many shops stock games applications but not educational or utility software, as there is a much larger market for the former.

Apple NZ have announced that they intend to place trained personnel in stores which retail Apple hardware, which is good news for the Timaru Harvey Norman store which is due to open shortly.

QUESTIONS, (some) ANSWERS and HINTS

This discussion session covered a number of problems, hints and suggestions. Some of the points raised included:

Preferred CDs for Recording: Which brands to use or avoid? Verbatim were recommended, although other brands are usually satisfactory. Transonic have sometimes given problems.

Photoshop Help: Where to find the Help when using Photoshop? This is available both online at Photoshop's website, or on the original installation disk Ð if it doesn't appear when using the application, check to see if it has been installed. If not, do so by performing a Custom Install.

Printing a Selection in AppleWorks: Microsoft Word allows the user to print a selection of text. It appears that this option is not available in AppleWorks Word Processing (although selections can be printed in AppleWorks Database and Spreadsheet documents)

SESSIONS

MacBASICS ~ USING TAB SETTINGS

Sheryl explained how Tab settings in word processing applications can be used in a variety of ways:

Auto Tab settings are usually set to default units. Clicking on the Tab bar removed the defaults and inserts the user's specified settings instead, which enables the setting-up of columns for lists and charts.

These Tab settings are section-specific, and do not have to apply to a whole document.

Settings may be removed by dragging them off the Tab bar.

Highlighting (selecting) lines of the document enables the Tab settings to be altered within the selection.

Beware of changing the font sizes after setting Tabs, as this can affect their spacing.
