July Meeting 2005

The AMUG July Meeting was held at on 29 July 2005 at

Seventeen members took advantage of attending the AMUG July Meeting at the Timaru Herald offices. After a brief meeting in the Board Room, Ray Bransgrove (AMUG member, and part of the Timaru Herald's Art Department Staff) gave us a most interesting and informative talk about the Art Department in general, and the use made by the Timaru Herald of Macintosh computers in particular.

Ray told us that the Timaru Herald uses 23 G4 Mac computers, which are still using Mac OS 9.2. Upgrading to MacOS X will take place when all related software is OS X-compatible. Major applications used are Quark Express (for page layout), Acrobat (for publishing), Illustrator (for drawing) and Photoshop 7 (for graphics and image handling. He explained some of the technical aspects which can either make the Art DepartmentÕs job easier or cause them problems Ð one example being designs which are submitted which do not allow for 'bleeds', which involve the colour extending beyond the borders of the design, to allow space for the printed design to be trimmed by guillotine). Ray illustrated his talk with a variety of examples of booklets, brochures, posters, stationery and pamphlets which had been designed and printed by the Timaru Herald.

Following this, Ray gave members a tour around the Herald offices, showing where editorial copy and advertising are processed, and where the Art Department operates. He demonstrated how he used his computer to adjust the layout of a customer's brochure to update a previous edition, and prepare the new version for printing.

Next we visited the printing room, where an advertising brochure which Bay had earlier described to us was being printed and collated Ð it was very interesting to see the presses at work, with the adjustments being made to the inking and paper-handling.

Our visit concluded with supper in the staff cafeteria, during which members had a further opportunity to question Ray and discuss with him informally. It was a most informative evening, and our thanks go to Ray for arranging the visit, being our host and sharing his experiences with us. We are also grateful to the Timaru Herald management for allowing us to visit, too see through their offices, and for making their facilities available to us.
